Schiermonnikoog

Schiermonnikoog is the smallest occupied island in the north of the Netherlands; situated in the Provence of Friesland.

In the 17th Century, Schiermonnikoog was made up of multiple little villages, the biggest one was called “Westerburen”, on the westside of the Island

The beautiful wide beaches found within the National Park Schiermonnikoog are amongst the widest beaches in Europe.

Schier means grey, monnik means monk and oog means eye as well as meaning the same as ei in the word eiland, meaning island.

At the end of the 19th Century, Schiermonnikoog had many regular visiting guests and holiday makers, who regularly frequented the island.

Schiermonnikoog is a true paradise for bird lovers. The island is known for its diverse and unusual bird species that can be admired there.

Since 1989, Schiermonnikoog has been a National Park.

The Wadden Sea is the largest system of tidal flats in the world, where natural processes occur with minimal interference. That's why the Wadden Sea has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO
