Beach poles
Schiermonnikoog’s coastline has been marked for the past 150 years by black and red beach poles. The poles were placed at the edges of the island as a warning system, to spot changes in the coastline. Any noticable changes would then lead to appropriate action being undertaken, to protect the environment and the village, and to prevent any damage to the island.
The beach poles have battled the elements and stood the test of time. Although technology has come a long way, the beach poles are still used as a warning system for any changes, but they are also used to help guests and islanders to orientate along the beach. The black and red beach poles are also of historic and cultural value. They are valued and respected by the people on the island, as part of their heritage.
