Bird-watching on Schiermonnikoog is a unique experience because the island is so varied in landscape.

1. the Westerplas
This is the largest freshwater lake on the island. From the bird-watching hut or at the bird-watching screen, you have a very good view of the lake. You have a chance to spot several species of ducks, spoonbills and the little egret. The bittern is rarely seen, but you can regularly hear its characteristic heavy ‘thumping’ sound here.
2. the surroundings of the marina
Watch from the dyke or look from the end of the pier by the marina, where you can see the waders foraging on the tidal flats at low tide.
3. the Kobbeduinen
On the border of the salt marsh and dune area near the Kobbeduinen, many songbirds reside. But you also have a chance to spot the marsh harrier, spoonbills or short-eared owls.
4. The Banckspolder
In spring and summer, the meadows in the Banckspolder are the favourite spot of many meadow birds such as curlews, oystercatchers and lapwings, and in winter very many wintering brent geese and barnacle geese can be seen.
